Q&A’s: Low BMI

Hello and welcome to our section of frequently asked questions, I’m Doctor Alvarez with endobariatric.com and on this episode we’ll talk about what a patient with a low BMI can expect with a gastric sleeve. In this category I’ll like to include anybody who has a starting point of a 37 BMI or less at the time of surgery. These patients will experience an amazing transformation, minimal or no loose skin and the best part of all…. the sizes you’ll be losing! You in particular will notice amazing changes in your sizes. There is something very important you need to know here… you will lose the weight of course but size changes will be more noticeable. Why is this? Well if you think of the excess weight you need to lose and then think about this happening in a 12 month timeframe, that is the amount of time it will take you to get to your goal, 12 months. If you divided the excess weight you carry during these 12 months it will not give you a big number per month or per week so don’t expect to lose your excess amount of weight in a very short period. You will still lose this in a time frame of 10 or 12 months. Now the first month after surgery you’ll get a very good head start on your weight loss and then you’ll hit a stall. Remember that these stalls are normal and needed. I have a video that talks more about these plateaus. Since you’ll be having these stalls, you’ll have readjustments and here is where you’ll notice the change in sizes that I’m telling you about. OK? So you’ll see some weight loss, then sizes, then some weight loss, then sizes again. Remember that this is 12 month process so be patient. I hope this helps and gives you more information on what to expect. If you have any questions feel free to contact me via my social media channels, my patients do have my direct email.
