Before & after gastric sleeve surgery

Phase 2

The full liquid diet is a temporary transition phase between clear liquids and the soft food diet. It is a diet to keep your body hydrated and to help get your body ready for food after surgery. Consume a small amount at first and see how your stomach handles it. You can continue to sip fluids all day with this phase as well. It is important to note whether your protein drink is soy or whey protein based. Some patients may not tolerate one and may want to switch to the other. Remember your goal is to take in 60-70 grams of protein and 64 oz. of fluids per day. In drinking the protein drinks, you are well on your way to fulfilling both goals. You may also continue to have all the items under the clear liquid diet as well.

  • You must stay in this phase for 2-weeks.
  • If you are lactose intolerant, you may use soy or rice milk instead of cow’s milk.

Some ideas for the full liquid stage are:

  • Milk -skim, 1% or 2 %
  • Soy Beverages
  • Fruit juices without the pulp (sugar-free versions)
  • Plain sugar free gelatin
  • Creamed Soups – blended so no chunks present (these tend to be higher in calorie, so watch the content use low-fat or fat-free versions)

NOTE: Avoid Tomato soup first couple of weeks due to acid production.

TIPS for this phase (full liquids):

  • Chunky Soups- put in the blender and thin out with liquid- (broth or water) (use the meat & veggie types, not pasta’s & rice varieties)
  • Drinkable Yogurt without fruit chunks
  • Blended fruit Smoothies
  • Carnation® Instant Breakfast
  • Ice Milk
  • Popsicles® made from sugar-free juices
  • Sugar free pudding
  • Egg Custard-thin
  • Whey Protein Shakes or any Protein shake that gives you 15-20 grams of protein per serving.
  • V-8® Juice
  • Sugar-free hot cocoa
  • Aktins® Advantage Shakes
  • Slim-Fast® Low-Carb Shakes
  • 100% Whey Protein Powder
  • Applesauce
  • LaBrada® RTD Protein shakes
  • Premier Protein®  – 30 Grams of Protein
  • Hood® Brand Low-Carb Chocolate milk beverage – use with your protein powder to make a great shake (Walmart® carries these in the dairy section)
  • Drink a high quality, liquid protein supplement of your choice and as an example: Body Fortress® 100% Whey Protein Powder, 100% Any Whey Protein Powder, Isopure®, Nectar® or Unjury® products in order to achieve 60-70 grams of protein each day. You may continue to use the 100% Whey Protein Isolite Bullets® that will give you 25 or 42 grams of Isolized protein in about 3 oz. tubes. Look for supplements that have more than 15 grams of protein, less than 5 grams of carbohydrates per serving and less than 130 calories. Men should probably consume more protein than women – 75-80 grams of protein per day. Be aware that this is sometimes very difficult in the first month and will become easier after that.
There are many products out on the market, some good tasting and others not so. See if you can try samples of products before purchasing a large container you may never finish.
